For all the DIYers out there check out this encyclopedia of homemade tools. I spend a lot of time on Garage Journal and various other tool/ fabrication/ hobby forums and it amazes me how resourceful people have made their own belt sanders, portable band saw tables, stamping dies, etc. And so much of it is additive. You can start with nothing more than a piece of steel and a fire and make a forged hammer and a chisel from which you can make a flat file and other handy tools. Then it’s onward and upward from there. There’s a million and one uses for a quality Made in the USA Baldor industrial motor.
I have an interest in homemade tools, but sadly, I often don’t have the luxury of time to make a lot of this stuff. Thus it gets bought. Maybe when I’ve got more time than money I can make a few more tools to add to my ever growing collection.
